Thomas Miller, 13 December 1949, Mount Morris, New Jersey, USA. Trained as a classical pianist, guitarist and vocalist Verlaine became interested in rock music upon hearing the Rolling Stones’ ‘19th Nervous Breakdown’. In 1968 he gravitated to New York’s lower east side, and formed the Neon Boys with bass player Richard Hell and drummer Billy Ficca. Although collapsing within weeks, the band inspired the founding of Television, which made its debut in March 1974. Verlaine’s desire for a regular venue transformed CBGB’s from a struggling bar into New York’s premier punk haven. Although his own band did not secure a major contract until 1976, his flourishing guitar work appeared on early releases by the Patti Smith Group. Television’s debut, Marquee Moon, was acclaimed a classic, although a lukewarm reception for the ensuing Adventure exacerbated inner tensions. www.thewonder.co.uk/
