Da Elvis Costellos første plade blev udgivet i 1977, kædede hans strittende kynisme og vrede ham sammen med punken og new wave-eksplosionen. En overfladisk lytning til My Aim Is True beviser, at den vigtigste forbindelse, Costello havde med punkerne, var hans uhæmmede passion; han rev gennem rockens bagsider og tog hvad han ville, samt lånte fra country, Tin Pan Alley-pop, reggae og mange andre musikalske genrer. I løbet af hans karriere adskilte denne musikalske eklekticisme Costellos plader lige så meget som hans voldsomt læsefærdige tekster.
