I USA huskes Gary Numan som et one-hit-wonder, mens han hjemme i sit hjemland England fortsatte med at producere hit efter hit og blev en superstjerne i processen. Hans iskolde rumalderpersona og lyd vil måske for altid være forbundet med den britiske new wave fra starten af 80'erne (Flock of Seagulls, tidlig Duran Duran osv.), men han var ophavsmanden, og i dag virker han ret original. Numan var en forsker i David Bowie Ziggy Stardust-æraen og brugte Bowies rumvæsen-tilgang som udgangspunkt.
