Jonathan Richman var en af rockens mest excentriske og uforudsigelige kultfigurer, en performer, hvis evigt barnlige offentlige persona og tilsyneladende naivitet - karakteriseret ved sange som "Ice Cream Man", "Hey There Little Insect" og "I'm a Little Aeroplane" - havde en tendens til at sløre behændigheden fra hans musikalske, rock-country-musik, til garage og rock. Født 15. maj 1951 i Boston, Massachusetts, begyndte Richman at spille guitar i en alder af 15, og inden for et år lavede han sine første offentlige optrædener.
