Efterhånden som Soft Machine bevægede sig længere væk fra rock på Third and Fourth, voksede trommeslager/vokalist Robert Wyatts utilfredshed med bandets retning, og da sessionerne startede for Fifth i slutningen af 1971, havde han forladt permanent for at danne Matching Mole. Mens den instrumentale Fourth havde strejfet dybt ind i jazz-rock-territoriet, fandt Fifth, at Soft Machine fungerede næsten fuldstændigt i jazzformsproget.
