Stereolab tog hidtil usete to år mellem 1997's Dots & Loops og 1999's Cobra og Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night, da de havde en tendens til personlige anliggender. For et band, der lavede singler og EP'er i begrænset oplag, sammen med et årligt album, mellem 1992 og 1997, var fuldstændig stilhed et fuldstændigt temposkifte, men de valgte tilfældigvis et godt tidspunkt at gå i afsondrethed.
