Jazztrompetist, Erskine Hawkins, blev født i Birmingham, Alabama, den 26. juli 1914. En talentfuld trompetist og en populær bandleder, Erskine Hawkins, fik tilnavnet "The 20th Century Gabriel." Han lærte trommer og trombone, før han skiftede til trompet, da han var 13, og var en af fem indsatte i Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame i 1978.
