I 1976 var Uriah Heep på gyngende grund. Selvom de havde opnået stor succes med Return to Fantasy, led gruppen af personlighedskonflikter (vokalist David Byron forlod efter dette album) og splittelse over deres musikalske retning. Denne spænding er synligt tydeligt på High and Mighty, et album, der viser glimt af gruppens gamle ildkraft, men som i sidste ende sænkes af en kombination af ufokuseret eksperimentering og ujævn sangskrivning.
