Mens han skrev og indspillede The Game, blev Queen bedt af den berømte filminstruktør Dino DeLaurentis om at levere soundtracket til hans kommende sci-fi-epos Flash Gordon. Bandet accepterede og begyndte straks at arbejde på begge albums samtidigt. Selvom mange fans til at begynde med kritiserede Flash Gordon, siden det blev udgivet som en officiel Queen-udgivelse snarere end et film-soundtrack, har det vist sig at være et af rockens bedre film-soundtracks gennem årene.
