To år efter "What Happens Next" vender Joe Satriani tilbage med sit studiealbum "Shapeshifting". De 13 Shapeshifting-titler er co-produceret af Satriani og Jim Scott (Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Den legendariske trommeslager Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty), Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) på bas og keyboard Eric Caudieux omgiver guitaristen med bidrag fra Lisa Coleman (The Revolution) og Christopher Guest. Den futuristiske retrolyd af den første single "Nineteen Eighty" viser en Satriani, der genbesøger sine tidlige år, da han spillede i sin første gruppe "The Squares".
