Med 82 tidligere uudgivne sange udfylder The Lost Albums kapitlerne i Springsteens omfattende karrierelinje, samtidig med at de tilbyder uvurderlig indsigt i hans liv og arbejde som kunstner. "The Lost Albums var komplette plader, nogle af dem endda til det punkt, hvor de blev mixet og ikke udgivet," sagde Springsteen. Fra lo-fi-udforskningen af LA Garage Sessions '83, der fungerede som et afgørende bindeled mellem Nebraska og Born in the USA, til trommeloops og synthesizer-lydene fra Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, tilbyder The Lost Albums en hidtil uset kontekst til 35 produktive år med Springsteens sangskrivning og hjemmeindspilninger. "Muligheden for at indspille derhjemme, når jeg ville, tillod mig at gå i en bred vifte af forskellige musikalske retninger," forklarede Springsteen. Gennem hele sættet tager disse soniske eksperimenter form af filmmusik (til en film, der aldrig blev lavet) på Faithless, country-kombinationer med pedal steel på Somewhere North of Nashville, rigt vævede grænsehistorier på Inyo, orkesterdrevet mid-century noir på Twilight Hours og E Street-foretrukket rock på Perfect World.
The Lost Albums fås i ni LP'er i begrænset oplag, inklusive originalemballage til hver tidligere uudgivet plade, med en 100-siders stofindbundet bog med hårdt omslag med sjældne arkivfotos, liner notes på hvert album fra essayisten Erik Flannigan og en personlig introduktion til projektet fra Springsteen selv.
