I 1968 udkom Status Quos første hitplade "Pictures of Matchstick Men", og debutalbummet fulgte snart efter. Singlen nåede #7 i Storbritannien og er fortsat bandets eneste store hitsingle i USA, hvor den nåede #12. Maleriske Matchstickable Messages fra Status Quo har adskillige covers, inklusive "Green Tambourine" af The Lemon Pipers og "Spicks and Specks" af The Bee Gees.
