Jerry Williams'-alias Swamp Dogg-første kærlighed var countrymusik, og lyttede til den som søværnsfamiliebarn, der voksede op i Portsmouth, Virginia. "Min bedstefar, han har lige købt countryplader ud af røvhullet," husker Swamp. "Hver fredag, når han kom hjem fra flådegården, stoppede han og hentede sine plader, som 'Mule Train' af Frankie Laine eller 'Riders in the Sky' af Vaughn Monroe." Hans første gang, han optrådte på scenen, var faktisk en countrysang til et talentshow, da han var seks år gammel: "Jeg lavede Red Foleys version af 'Peace in the Valley'."
