Johnny Thunders, stiftende medlem og leadguitarist for 1970'ernes proto-punk-bands The New York Dolls og The Heartbreakers, var kendt for sin grove, intense guitarlyd. Hans musikalske stil fungerede som en slags blueprint for generationer af bands, inklusive Sex Pistols. Efter at The Heartbreakers gik fra hinanden, indspillede Thunders sit første soloalbum, So Alone, i 1978.
