Til Walk the Line, hans biografi af countrylegenden Johnny Cash, tog instruktøren James Mangold en anden taktik, end instruktøren Taylor Hackford gjorde med sin Ray Charles-biografi, Ray. Hvor Hackford brugte Charles' klassiske originale optagelser til Atlantic som filmens hjerte, besluttede Mangold at bruge nye optagelser til sin film og hyrede producer T-Bone Burnett, hjernen bag den overraskende soundtrack-succes fra Coen Brothers' gamle O Brother, Where Art Thou?, til at styre sit rollebesætning gennem genskabelser af den klassiske Sun-lyd.
