Efter at have forladt Virgin-pladen og et engangsalbum med Chrysalis, gjorde Simple Minds status og besluttede at lave plader til sig selv. Et album med coverversioner af sange, der er kære for Jim Kerr og Charlie Burchill, "Neon Lights" blev udgivet i oktober 2001. Bandet satte deres uforlignelige præg på sange af Van Morrison, David Bowie, Pete Shelley, Patti Smith, Kraftwerk, The Doors, Echo & The Bunnymen, Neil Young, Roxy Underground Music og the Velvet Underground Music. Der er også inkluderet to bonusnumre: covers fra Human League og Joy Division.
