Paul Banks was born in Denver, Colorado, but my family moved around a lot back then, as my father, who was a microbiologist, followed job opportunities. In Chicago, in the coffee house days of the late ’50s and early ’60s, my mother and stepfather opened The Purple Door, a small folk club, and later The Green Door, a slightly larger venue. I remember performances by Judy Collins, Odetta and The Stanley Brothers. In 1961 we moved to Copenhagen, and a few years later, they opened a new Purple Door in a daytime cafeteria. It took 45 minutes to set up a movable wall, some giant photos of musicians, table clothes and candles - and the room was transformed into a club.
