With the LP “Live! Blue Vinyl Edition Edition,” released on Rough Trade, Pulp presents the next level of its creativity while remaining, on the whole, true to its established style. The band led by frontman Jarvis Cocker once again relies on the tried-and-true blend of sharp, literate lyrics, catchy melodies, and a flair for theatrical moments that reanimates the studio arrangements as live, immersive spaces of drama. Musically, the material combines rock and pop elements with touches of art rock; put more soberly, clear song structures, atmospheric keyboard textures, and incisive guitar lines create a characteristic arc of tension. The live presentation brings Cocker’s vocal narrative stance to the fore and gives the songs new space, in the choruses as well as in the quieter passages. In this way, the LP is both a documentary addition to the band’s history and a statement of its continuing artistic identity, reaffirming Pulp as a distinctive representative of British indie and alternative music.
