NEW VINYL LP ON KINGSTON SOUNDS 2014

180 GRAM VINYL

Kingston Sounds cock an ear to the short lived Rocksteady period of Jamaican pop history with a 16-track selection including Roy Shirley, Uniques, Max Romeo and Sensations among others. In the extremely hot summer of 1966, producers like Joe Gibbs, Bunny Lee and Derrick Harriot created a new slower style of Jamaican pop music that eschewed the frenzied pace of Ska for something a little more suited to the heat of the dance. This period would soon morph into the style of reggae which dominated the 70s, but during those brief two years some damn fine music ruled the island. The comp features well known classics like Roy Shirley's 'Touch Them' produced by Joe Gibbs and the Uniques standard 'People Rocksteady', next to lesser known killers like the terrific Glen Adams cut 'S-H-I (I'm Shocking)' and the gorgeous vocal hamonies of Caribbeans' 'Butterflies'. Educational!
