Recorded in New York after a few years spent in Paris, Attica Blues finds Archie Shepp stepping into a world of righteous, full-on, political and funky themes. In support here is a fine group of New York's underground players, a small string ensemble and a few singers including soul diva Joshie Armstead and vocalist Joe Lee Wilson. The record comes from a free jazz tradition, but moves into a more rhythmic focus in order to communicate its message and the addition of vocals and recitations is wonderful here.
