The rehearsal tracks that make up the lion's share of Rubber Legs have been reissued many times under different titles, and paired with various tunes from the post-Raw Power Stooges. But when it first appeared in 1987 it served as a fine companion to the previously unheard material found on Metallic K.O., tunes that may have made up the contents of a fourth studio LP. What's striking about the first three takes -- all six were taped live in a studio setting -- isn't the sound quality, which is good, but the high energy level of the group, and Iggy Pop's ferocious vocals; it's like a violent explosion every time he opens his mouth. The hard-rocking "Rubber Legs" is similar musically to another ditty from the period, "Wet My Bed," and like many of the compositions here is still being developed lyrically. "Open Up and Bleed" is a dirge reminiscent of "Gimme Danger," and "Johanna," Iggy's declaration of love/hate for a former girlfriend, was later recorded for the Kill City project.
