The classic collaboration between Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart in May 1975 led to a stream of new compositions, a tour, and eventually an album. "Bongo Fury" consists primarily of live recordings from Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, supplemented by occasional studio recordings from the Record Plant in Los Angeles.

The album is a memorable addition to Zappa's catalog and the last to use the band name "Mothers" before it was phased out in 1976.

This new 50th anniversary edition features analog mastering of the main album by Bernie Grundman, pressed onto 180g black vinyl directly from the original master tapes. The release also includes a bonus disc featuring selected highlights from the 6-disc box set, a lithograph print, and a booklet with never-before-seen photos and liner notes from band member Denny Walley and Vaultmeister Joe Travers.
